Biography: Born in England to Irish parents, she spent her formative years living in Ireland. She moved back to England iat 16 to enroll in the Royal Conservatory of Music and also studied in Prague. In the early 1930s, she organized a regular series of concerts featuring music by female composers in Notting Hill, London. She later served as chair of the Composers Guild of Great Britain, and as president of the Society for the Promotion of New Music.
Maconchy's cycle of thirteen string quartets, composed between 1932 and 1983, is regarded as the peak of her musical achievements, with the 5th (1948) considered the best by many critics. Other notable works include "The Voice of the City" (1943) for women's chorus and the comic opera "The Sofa" (1959).
